Exercise 4: Word Play + Typographic Space + Message
In this project I focus on using various visual design principles to turn word pairs into compositions. Unity, hierarchy, scale and placement are just a few of the principles that I must consciously use when creating these compositions. I need to start by creating a minimum of six sketches for each word pair that will then be designed in Illustrator on 8" x 8" pages. And I need a total of three word pairs, so a minimum of 18 iterations.
This project in my opinion was very challenging. Some of the word pairs were hard to understand how they correlate with each other. It was hard being able to be creative and depict meaning in the composition.
Near/Far
Contained/Unleashed
Rocket/Crash
I had more fun with this word pair. I saw it more as an action. Like the word crash literally crashing into the rocket. Or in the second how the rocket crashed into the word and having it split up.
Inside/Outside
Overall as I mentioned I thought this was a challenging project. I'm currently working on resubmitting a new attempt. But I think where I went wrong was the lack of understanding of the words. I need to spend more time understanding the word pair. Maybe the words I picked were just very challenging, but at the moment I felt like I could make something out of almost nothing.
